El Viento Foundation Results
In March of 2008, El Viento invited the ninth group of twenty-five children into our program. This is a significant milestone for us as our program now serves close to 200 students and their families.
In 2006, our first class of fourth graders graduated from high school and entered college. The example that these students are setting for other El Viento participants is both challenging and rewarding. Their success is the community's success and a testament to the effectiveness of community involvement, participation and leadership.
June 2008 will see our second group of student graduate from high school and begin the transition of entering college in the fall. This noteworthy accomplishment further impacts the lives not only of our students, but also the lives of their families and the community at large. We are very proud of these successes and look forward to celebrating many more in the future!
One of El Viento's differentiating factors is that an independent program evaluation is conducted annually in order to both assess the effectiveness of our programs and make adjustments where needed. Here are some major findings from the last two evaluations:
2007-2008 Annual Report
2007
- El Viento students maintained an almost half-point increase in GPA over matched control students in 10th and 12th grade.
- Overall, high school students had a significantly higher GPA than matched control students.
- Visual analysis suggests that El Viento students in 5th grade had better overall standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics than matched comparison groups.

2006
- Findings indicate that both parents and students had high levels of trust in the program from their initial contact. Student trust remained high over time and parent trust increased significantly in the first year, remaining high and stable in the second year of the program.
- Students in grades 4 through 8 had significantly higher math scores than their peers.
- Average GPA scores suggest that El Viento students maintain a significant half-point advantage over the matched comparison group through the 11th grade.
